Measuring Female Hair Loss with the Savin Scale

What is the Savin Scale?

The Savin scale is a chart used to measure the most common types of female hair loss, and it is also used to determine the varying degrees of hair thinning as well. The other female hair loss measuring system, called the Ludwig scale, does not take hair density into account. This measuring system is not only valid for those who are experiencing female pattern baldness.

The Savin scale measures hair loss in three areas of the scalp. They are:

Frontal Loss – this scale measures hair loss around the hairline and temples, which is typically more prevalent with male pattern hair loss, but still happens to women too.

Midscalp – this scale measures hair loss that occurs at the middle of the scalp. Hair loss in this region starts as a widening part that eventually becomes a circular area of loss.

Crown – again, this is far more prevalent with male pattern baldness, but does tend to happen with females as well, though usually to a lesser extent. Crown hair loss refers to thinning at the top of the head, towards the back.

Should you use the Savin scale to measure your own hair loss?

The Savin scale is the most effective way to measure the rate of your baldness, without seeing a doctor or specialist.  This scale will give you a pretty accurate measurement of what stage you are at in the hair loss process.

Once you have diagnosed the stage of hair loss, you can then begin to look into what types of products and treatments would suit you best.  Early stages of female hair loss can be treated much easier then if you are suffering from ore advanced stages of baldness.  The chances of tackling hair loss can be made more effective by measuring your stage of thinning against the Savin scale.  The more you know about your hair loss, the better placed you are in when treating it.
