Can Osteoporosis Drug Cure Baldness?

Scientists are backing the osteoporosis drug 'WAY-316606' to help with male pattern baldness

Over 60% of men suffer from hair loss by the age of 40, but if the latest news is anything to go by, many men may have finally found a solution for their thinning locks.

Latest scientific research and development has found that a treatment originally developed to help osteoporosis may also help cure baldness. The study was conducted in a lab using human hair samples, it there is a good chance it may be a viable treatment for people suffering from thinning hair, according to Dr. Nathan Hawkshaw of the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

From early research, Hawkshaw and his team were already aware of an osteoporosis treatment called Cyclosporine A, and that it can stimulate hair growth by inhibiting a protein called SFRP1. The problem is, this type of medication has too many side effects to be used as an actual treatment for balding, so the next step is to come up with a safer solution.

The researchers looked for similar compounds that would inhibit the SFRP1 protein, which prevents hair from growing. They came across another osteoporosis treatment known as WAY-316606, and tested it on hair samples from 40 patients undergoing hair transplant surgery.

WAY-316606 inhibited the SFRP1 protein and actually promoted hair growth in just a matter of days. So, the study clearly shows that it is possible to create an effective treatment by using WAY-316606, however, it has only been tested on hair samples so far, therefore more advanced testing on living humans would be needed for this treatment to be medically approved. Approving a treatment such as this could takes years, so unfortunately it is not as simple as it seems.

There are already medications and treatments on the market for hair loss, but results vary with each individual. The FDA approved drugs like Propecia and Minoxidil, both come with unwanted side-effects, which most men try to avoid.  Natural multi-vitamin hair supplements like VIVISCAL and HR23+ are becoming increasingly popular with men (and women) who are trying to prevent the pattern of hair fall and shedding.
