What is the Best Way to Repair Damaged Hair?


For many of us, our hair can be easily damaged.  This isn't particularity good, especially if we are already prone to baldness and thinning hair.  Our hair can be damaged in a number of ways - sometimes it is self-inflicted, and other times is is completely out of our control.

Most of us suffer from damaged hair during the periods of the year when our strands are at their weakest. So, in this article we'll be going through the types of hair damage, what causes it, and how best to treat it.

The main types of hair damage


If we exclude genetical baldness, then we are left with three main types of hair damage. They are:
  • Dull and lacking in shine
  • Fragile and split ends
  • Thinning hair and patchy scalp

The main causes of damaged hair


Hair damage occurs when parts of the hair structure are altered, which weakens hair and sets off a domino effect of noticeable results that look and feel like unhealthy hair. Damage to the hair's structure can be caused by a number of factors - the main ones being:
  • The sun - the heat and UV rays
  • Hair styling products
  • Excess sweating 
  • Hair colouring
  • Heat tools - straighteners, perms, blow-drying 
  • Chemical treatments
  • Stress related - Excess pulling 
  • Seasonal Shedding

How damaged hair can be treated


Hair damage can be treated in a number of different ways.  Hair damage can be fully repaired in most cases, but it really does depend on the individual. 

Apply SPF on your hair.  It sounds a little crazy, but by applying a small amount of SPF moisturiser on your hair, particularly during the hotter months of the year, you'll protect your locks from the harmful UV rays.  You would be surprised to know how damaging the sun can be to your hair, and so in this case you should treat your hair like your skin.  Applying SPF on your strands has the potential to protect you hair from damage by up to 80%.

Ease up on the styling products. Hairstyling products don't cause hair loss, but they can damage your locks, and this can be particularly bad if you already have weak hair. Less is more, so ease up on the heavy styling products, and give your strands a chance to breath.  This rule should also be applied for hair colouring, chemical treatments, dying, and the use of heat tools like straighteners and blow-dryers.  Heat tools can be hugely damaging to your hair.

Live healthy. Much of the damage to our locks is self-inflicted. Stress can make us pull at the hair and weaken it in the process. De-stressing is much easier said than done, but there are plenty of things you can do to help de-stress, such as being more active, eating a healthy, high-protein diet, and generally living a healthier life. The healthier you are, the better your hair will be.
