Here are 11 things you can do to help prevent your hair shedding, or getting damaged during winter. Implement some, or all of these into your daily haircare routine, and you should see a big difference in your strands, right away.
1. Shampoo less often
It's a good idea to shampoo your hair a little less, if you can. We'd recommend washing your hair with shampoo about three times a week, and on the other days, either wash with water on its own, or use a natural dry shampoo.
2. Moisturise your hair
Blasts of dry, cold air are not good for any type of hair. Long spells of exposure to central heating is also bad for the strands. You can combat it by using a moisturiser on your locks. This protect the hair and it will evaporate more slowly to protect textured hair.
3. Spray water on your hair
It sounds bizarre, but spraying some water in your hair two to three times a day can help it immensely. Now, try to avoid drenching your hair - we're talking about spraying a tiny amount that just sits on top of your strands and absorbs in slowly. This will help you avoid dryness and flaking.
4. Use leave-in conditioner
We don't often recommend using conditioner, especially if you suffer from thin hair or baldness, but to keep the hair fully hydrated, regular conditioning can be a handy tool. A good leave-in conditioner will help reduce static hair, and keep the hair moisturised and hydrated.
5. Avoid dying your hair
Regular hair dying can be incredibly damaging to the strands. Limiting the amount of chemicals applied to your hair will improve moisture levels and decrease breakage. For men, highlights aren't so bad, but it's the dying at the root that causes the most issues, and should be avoided, if possible.

6. Reduce heat-heavy styling products
All that heat and dryness from heat-based styling devices will result in split ends and breakage. You can counter this with leave-in conditioners, to prevent breakage, and protective styles, such as braids, buns, twists, and ponytails, which give hair time off from the heat routine.
7. Avoid hair exposure to the cold
It’s absolutely critical to dry hair thoroughly before going outside to the cold. Anything that’s cold expands, and that’s what can happen with your wet hair shaft in the cold weather, which puts you at risk for breakage. Going back to point 3: only gently spray water on your hair when you are indoors for long periods.
8. Wear the right hats
Common hat materials like wool, cotton, and other coarse fabrics can cause split ends and breakage, so make sure you always line wool, acrylic, and/or cotton hats with silk or satin. The kinder the material to your hair, the less unnecessary damage will occur.
9. Use dry shampoo
Those with oily hair might find their hair goes extraordinarily limp, which can ruin your style and look. This is why we often advise against conditioning, especially at the root. Use a good dry shampoo to help thicken the hair. They are great for this: they keep the hair fuller and more robust, and expand the hair shaft.
10. Use an oil or serum
Dry night air leeches moisture from your skin as well as your hair. Applying a good serum on dry hair right before bed, can make a huge difference to the health of your strands. Serums are excellent vehicles of moisture, since they pass through dry hair better than wet.
11. Take vitamins
Multi-vitamin supplements offer a good solution for men and women who are constantly battling hair loss, particular during the winter months. A good multi-vitamin supplement enables you to feed your hair with all the right nutrients needed for your hair to grow. They can also help prevent hair loss.
