Hair Care Tips for Spring Season

With the days getting longer and temperatures rising, you can just sense spring season is well on its way. And, just like your wardrobe, your hair is due for a seasonal change. Here, hair stylist Jamie Dutton shares top hair care tips for transitioning your routine from winter to spring.

Start with a trim

Winter has a nasty habit of damaging our hair. The cold time of year can play havoc, so snipping off the dead ends is the first step to freshening up for spring. Remember, we only recommend a small trim - nothing major. Just a little tidy up. Get your hairdresser to take off all the dry, split ends. This will make your hair look and feel healthier.

Use Conditioners

If you've been using predominately shampoos over the winter months, then consider adding a conditioner to your hair care routine during spring. The combination of humid spring air and hydrating products may put too much moisture in your hair... which ups the potential for frizz. A conditioner will help keep your hair smooth, and free from frizz or damage. Do not use conditioner more than twice a week though.

Highlight your hair

As the weather gets brighter, so too should your locks. If you typically get highlights, ask your colourist for a technique called balayage: It involves painting the colour onto individual strands in a random pattern, rather than the methodical placement of traditional foil highlights. It works for all hair colours. This will help create a beautiful sun-kissed look, perfect for the sunnier days.

Use topical serums

Combat inevitable spring shedding with a good topical serum. Topical serums can help prevent excess shedding, and strengthen the strands at the root. If you are already prone to shedding, or suffer from naturally thin hair, then a good topical serum should be an essential part of your hair care routine. We recommend HR23+ Scalp Therapy Serum.

Heat based styling products

Be careful when using heat based styling products like hairdryers and straighteners, because they can cause severe damage to your hair if used excessively. However, hot tools are invaluable for keeping strands smooth, so be sure to use them sparingly, and carefully.

Beat humidity

Never used an anti-humidity spray? It's a game-changer during muggy months. Mist the spray on dry hair post-styling, aiming toward the roots. You can even stash it in your purse and use as a mid- or end-of-day touch-up. Just don't overdue it, as too much can leave a residue. Try Oribe Imperéable Anti-Humidity Purse Spray ($19.50, oribe.com).

Take vitamins

Hair vitamins are hugely popular and massively effective, particularly if you're trying to reduce shedding and promote better looking hair growth. Multi-vitamin supplements are a great way of getting all the right vitamins and minerals into your daily intake.  Supplements like Viviscal and HR23+ can help prevent hair fall, reduce damage, and support healthy, thicker, hair growth, both in men and women.
