How To Prevent Greasy Hair

Apart from hair loss, greasy hair is the most complained about hair condition, particularly amongst women. Greasy hair is said to be inherited through your genetics, but there can also be other common causes to the problem.

What causes Greasy Hair?

Greasy hair is essentially a mix of debris and your scalp’s natural oils that accumulate over time. It doesn’t matter whether your hair is thick, fine, curly or straight; people of all hair types are exposed to environmental aggressors and produce sebum. It’s just that it’s more visible and easily accumulated in fine hair, compared with your thick or curly-haired friend, say.

Greasy hair is an inconvenience, but it can be treated effectively with the right hair care routine, and products. In this article, we'll go through a few ways in which you can stump greasy hair, not just for a day, but for the long term.

1. Anti-Grease Shampoo

Washing your hair with 'normal' shampoo won't solve the issue of greasy hair.  You'll need to start using a special anti-grease shampoo to get your hair in the condition you want it. Anti grease shampoos contain a key blend of ingredients that specifically target grease. The good ones will eliminate grease, without making your hair too dry.

Anti grease shampoos are perfect for those who suffer from an oily scalp and dandruff, helping to minimise oils and impurities to deeply cleanse your locks. They can also eliminate dandruff causing micro-organisms and banishes excess sebum to leave your scalp cleansed and refreshed.

2. Talcum Powder

This may seem a bit odd, but if you haven't tried talcum powder on your hair, then give it a try. The oil absorbing property of talcum powder makes it work like dry shampoo on your hair. If your hair is greasy, sprinkle some talcum powder on the roots. Gently work it through the hair and brush away the excess. The talcum will blot away extra oil refreshing your hair instantly.

Talcum powder is cheap, fast working, effective, and you can even choose your desired scent.

3. Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is great for all hair types - even if your hair isn't oily. You can use dry shampoo to give your hair extra volume when styling. It's a handy product to have at all times, and it can dramatically reduce the appearance of greasy strands. There are so many different brands and formulas on the market, so it's just a case of finding the right one that works best for you and your hair, individually.

It is also key not to wet wash your hair too often (no more than 3-4 times a week), and so dry shampooing is a great way to keep your hair dry, and clean.

4. Volumising Powder

Volumising powder is great for adding volume to your hair which is perfect for men and women who suffer from greasy strands. While dry shampoo is an excellent choice for those who need to freshen up without having to go through a shower routine to make their hair look great, the hair volumising powder acts as a styling product, giving the hair a dry, matte look.

5. Lemon Juice

Finally, it's not just on-the-shelf products that can help reduce the effects of greasy hair, because a certain home made remedy can also work wonders for your strands. Home made lemon juice can help minimise oiliness, giving your hair a dryer, matte look.

Lemon helps to rejuvenate the scalp and add gloss to dull hair. The astringent and purifying qualities of lemon make it perfect for those with oily hair. And for those reasons, the ancient Egyptians used lemon juice as the shampoo to remove dirt and grease from hair.

Mix the equivalent of the juice from 1 lemon with 1 cup water and rinse through your hair, then rinse with warm water. Lemon juice can help control shampoo build-up, too.
