Hair Loss Tip During Quarantine: Derma Rolling (Micro-Needling)

With the world facing such uncertain times, many of our lives will be drastically affected, in one way or another.  We'll experience a lot of changes, and our daily routines will be considerably different to how we know.

So, during this spell of uncertainly, your hair really doesn't have to suffer. The Hair Loss Review Centre is focused on bringing you some key tips and advice for treating hair loss, perfect for you to try during the lock down period.

Hair Loss Tip During Quarantine #1: Derma Rolling (Micro-Needling)

Micro-needling is also nicknamed skin needling, because of its effects on increasing collagen production in the skin. It's thought that this can result in new hair growth, or perhaps, it may thicken thinning hair as seen in androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness.

Clinical research on using the micro-needling method for hair loss has shown that a derma roller is effective in helping to repair hair loss, both with and without minoxidil (the FDA approved topical hair growth solution). Results showed that men, in particular, who used the derma roller with minoxidil had significantly more hair growth than the men who used minoxidil on its own.

How does micro-needling work?

Aside from collagen production in the skin, which is thought to underlie one of the reasons it may be beneficial for acne scars, it's thought that micro-needling can also help induce stem cells in the hair follicles that may lead to hair growth.

The device used for micro-needling, a derma roller, penetrates the skin and wounds it. The skin then goes through a repair process, of which collagen and protein is produced, thus stimulating hair growth.

How to use a derma roller?

Using a derma roller is very easy. You can use a 0.25mm roller every other day, or everyday only if your skin can tolerate daily treatment. To stimulate endothelial growth factor production for follicle and hair growth, you can use 0.5 to 1.5 mm rollers. You can use 0.5mm once per week, or once per Month.

Simply roll the device over the balding/thinning areas of your scalp (hairline and crown region) in two to three directions, and that's it, you're done. Be sure to press the roller firmly, but not too hard. You want to wound the skin, so you should experience a slight discomfort when rolling.

How long does it take for derma roller to regrow hair?

A dermaroller with longer needles (0.5 – 1.5 mm) significantly boosts the production of endothelial growth factors for hair. Such dermarollers for hair growth are the most effective. You just need to use it once every 1-3 weeks.  You should start to experience the regrowth of baby hairs within 6-12 weeks. You should continue to use even after this period, for full growth potential.

Where to buy a derma roller?

Derma rollers can be purchased online from a number of different places. You can get a perfectly good derma roller for under £10 on popular shopping sites like Amazon.
