Does Melatonin Help with Hair Loss?

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone primarily released by the pineal gland that regulates the sleep–wake cycle. As a dietary supplement, it is often used for the short-term treatment of insomnia, and is typically taken orally.

Given its effect on hair in animals, melatonin has been investigated for its effects on treating alopecia (hair loss) in humans. Melatonin treatment has shown to have high potential for success in patients suffering from varying hair loss conditions. It has also shown great improvement in preventing continued hair loss and thinning of the hair.

Melatonin is most commonly used as a topical solution, but it also comes in pill form.

Melatonin Treatment for Baldness

Melatonin is now being used to treat varying types of hair loss in men and women, particularly pattern baldness. Originally produced and marketed in pill form to help regulate sleep-wake cycles in patients with temporary sleep pattern problems, the new topical form can also help prevent thinning hair.

In 2003 a double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study was conducted in France on eight healthy women to assess the effectiveness melatonin might have for combating thinning hair. One group were given the Melatonin solution, topically, and the other group were given a fake solution.

Based on the results from all of the participants, it was observed that a gradual increase in blood serum melatonin levels, which was vital for hair growth and restoration, was noted on the participants who were treated with the cosmetic melatonin solution. This was promising indeed, and it showed that there was a genuine benefit from using Melatonin for hair loss.

An open-label, clinically controlled study was also conducted in Italy. This was to determine the efficacy and therapeutic benefits of topical Melatonin solutions. This time, the test was conducted on 35 men showing early signs of male pattern baldness, age-range 18-40. Each of the participants of this test were treated with a melatonin hair solution applied to their scalp daily. Each participant’s hair count and hair density was recorded at 12 and 24 week intervals.

The results showed that a 55% increase of hair count and density was visible after just 3 and 6 months. To those participants who showed a positive response, a 29% increase in hair count was noted after only 3 months and an increase of 43% after 6 months. This showed hugely promising results, and that Melatonin had excellent potential to be a genuine treatment for baldness.

In addition, nearly 75% of participants maintained their hair count and density after the six month trial period was over.  This test concludes that continuous use of topical Melatonin solutions can greatly improve the hair count and hair density of patients going through early stages of baldness. Add this to the positive results shown in female participants, and you can see a topical solution with huge potential for treating hair loss.

NutraM is a type of topical Melatonin out in the market. This serum helps utilise the full potential of Melatonin in support of hair growth. It also naturally blocks dihydrotestosterone or DHT and helps in reversing the effects of thinning hair. NutraM is a totally greaseless formula that leaves no residue on the hair and scalp allowing it to be easily applied and styled into the hair.

Among the known methods of treatment for hair loss, the topical form of Melatonin treatment has shown the most potential for success in patients suffering from baldness and thinning hair. It has also shown the most improvement in preventing continued hair loss and thinning of the hair.

There’s even evidence that topical melatonin can reverse hair loss in humans.Melatonin solution applied to the scalp can help increase hair growth significantly.

What are the negative effects of melatonin?

Melatonin has been used safely for up to 2 years in some people. However, it can cause some side effects including headache, short-term feelings of depression, daytime sleepiness, dizziness, stomach cramps, and irritability.
