12 Things To Do Before You Hit 40, to Prevent Hair Loss


Baldness and thinning hair is one of the most common problems for men and women; affecting over one-third of the population.  It is also the most concerning non-life-threatening condition a person can go through.

Hair loss isn't about to go away any time soon.  It seems it's here to stay, and for most of us, we start thinning at around the age of 35-40. And the problem is, we've still not found a cure for this soul-sapping condition.

If you're in your 30s, or even your 20s for that matter, and you are worried about losing your locks, then fear not, because all hope is not lost. There are certain things you can do every single day that can help strengthen your strands, and help you maintain your hair for longer. But that's if you are suffering from early stages of thinning of course.

In no particular order, here are 12 things you can do right now that will help you prevent hair loss as you get older.


1. De-stress


There have been plenty of studies that have found medical evidence to link stress with baldness and thinning hair. So, a lot easier said than done, but try and de-stress yourself; one of the ways of doing it is by practising meditation or yoga. Even a martial art or a physical activity can help reduce stress and restore your hormonal balance, which will only benefit your hair.

2. Act early


It's a well known fact that if you tackle hair loss early, you'll have a better chance of retaining your head of hair for longer. If you're noticing your hair falling out, then do something about it as soon as you can. Remember, it can take months, even years, to find the right treatment plan that works for you individually, so get on it early, no excuses.

3. Avoid crash diets


Going on random crash diets can actually cause your hair to shed. If you want to keep your hair, then the key is to be consistent with your diet and your overall lifestyle.

4. Eat the right foods


Your body thrives on high-protein foods, and your hair is no different. Giving your hair all the right proteins should be an essential part of your daily routine. The better you feed your hair, the stronger it will grow.

6. Avoid over-styling the hair


Many of us often lose a lot of hair through heavy styling products, and this can so easily be prevented.  If you already suffer from thin or fine textured hair, then avoid sticky, gunky styling products.  Opt for softer textured products that are gentle on the locks, and cause less damage. 

7. Reduce heating and drying


Heat devices like blow-dryers and straighteners do not cause baldness, but they often damage and break the hair, which is not ideal, especially if you already suffer from thinning hair.  Try to reduce the time you spend using these heat stylers on your hair. 

8. Regular scalp massage


Regularly massaging the scalp helps your hair follicles remain active. If your follicles are in need of a boost, then get yourself booked into a massage therapist, and get some weekly sessions in. 

9. Avoid brushing wet hair


The hair is at its weakest state when it's wet, so be sure to avoid brushing wet hair. But if you must comb wet hair, use a very wide-toothed comb. Also avoid brushing hair too frequently as doing so can damage hair and increase shedding. Use your fingers to gently undo tangles, not a comb or brush.

10. Drink lots of Green Tea


Green tea is a good source of panthenol, which is often used in shampoos and conditioners to strengthen hair and manage split ends. Panthenol, along with the other antioxidants present in green tea, may help in strengthening the hair and making it healthier.

11. Stay hydrated


Drink water, an plenty of it, because the more hydrated you are, the healthier your whole body will be, including your hair.  Never underestimate the importance of water. 

12. Speak to your doctor


There are many health conditions that can cause changes in hormonal balances which in turn lead to baldness. Make sure you see a doctor regularly for your underlying illnesses and conditions.  Your hair loss could be down to some other illness that you may be unaware of.
