Products That Can Cause Hair Loss

What Causes Baldness?

  • Q:  We hear a lot about products that can treat hair loss, but I would like to know what products can actually cause baldness.  Are there any, and which ones in particular should I look out for?

Answer:  Firstly, it should be noted that hair loss can be caused by a number of different factors such as illness, stress, hormonal imbalances, and most commonly androgenic hair loss, which is genetics. For this reason, no products or treatments can lead to male or female pattern baldness.

However, if you are already prone to pattern baldness, then using some products or treatments that have harsh effects on your scalp, will do more harm than good for your strands. That is why you should carefully consider your hair care plan if you already suffer from thinning hair.

So, if you suffer from severe thinning, or even seasonal shedding, then be sure to avoid harsh hairstyling products and heat-based devices, as they will likely do more damage to your locks than good.  If you are trying to minimise the effects of baldness, then you need to establish exactly what products benefit your hair.

Here are some products that could be worth avoiding (or at least minimising the use of) if you suffer from genetic hair loss:
  • Blow dryers
  • Hair straighteners
  • Thick/sticky hair styling products
  • Chemically harsh shampoos and conditioners

You should not worry about things like brushing your hair or tying it too tightly, because this will not damage your hair to the extent of the products mentioned above.  But when it comes to treating your hair, a lot of it is common sense.  If you are losing your strands from a particular product or routine then simply change or alter it as you go along.   There isn't a cure for pattern baldness, but there are simple ways which you can minimise it.
