Does Caster Oil Promote Hair Growth?

How does caster oil stimulate hair growth?

Caster oil, in recent times, has been seen by many beauty experts as one of the most effective natural solutions for hair loss. This old remedy has been used in medicine for years, but now experts claim caster oil to be an excellent moisturiser for the scalp, which helps ease dandruff, minimise hair breakage, and leave your hair in an overall better condition.

Sourced from the castor bean (Ricinus communis), castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid which is found to fight inflammation. When applied to the scalp, it has shown to enhance the health of the hair strands and, in turn, promote hair growth. It can even help prevent hair loss, which is a welcome bonus.

The benefits of caster oil

Many experts from the natural beauty industry are full of praise for caster oil, and many of them claim is can dramatically increase the rate of hair growth, and in some cases, it can boost hair growth by up to five times the usual rate.

There is no scientific or medical evidence to show that castor oil can promote hair growth, but the results experienced from using caster oil by men and women with thinning hair, are in some cases, quite remarkable.  Although not scientifically proven, research does indicate that castor oil can improve the appearance of hair by increasing its luster.

How to use caster oil

Caster oil is very easy to use, and should really be no different to using a topical hair serum.  Simply apply a few drops onto your scalp, rub in gently, and leave in for the desired time. You can also massage a few additional drops of castor oil into your hair’s midsection and ends, which may protect against breakage and improve hair texture.

Like with most topical serums or oils, it would be well advised to leave the solution in for at least a few hours, therefore this type of oil would probably be best to apply at night. To prevent oil drippings from staining your clothing and other items, be sure to massage the oil well into the scalp until the solution is semi-absorbed.

What is the best caster oil for hair growth?

We would always advise you to opt for organic, cold-pressed products. Cold-pressed oils are much higher-quality and more nutrient-rich than those processed at greater temperatures.  When it comes to using castor oil as a hair treatment, one of the most popular varieties is Jamaican black castor oil. Made with roasted castor beans, Jamaican black castor oil is said to be especially beneficial to those with thick, dry, and/or coarse hair.

Does caster oil have any side-effects?

Caster oil is generally seen as a safe product to use, however, in some cases, you may experience side-effects such as abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, dizziness, nausea, or skin rash. These side-effects are very rare, and only tend to occur if you have an allergy to the oil.

If you’re thinking of using castor oil to try and treat baldness, remember that hair loss may be the sign of an underlying health problem. Therefore, it’s advised you speak to your doctor or an industry expert for the best advice.
