Hair Loss Cure in 2020?

Another year seems to have flown by, and still, it feels like we are no nearer to finding a genuine cure for hair loss. It seems we can put a man on the moon, but when it comes to solving the major issue of baldness, we get stumped.

One of the most searched terms in Google is 'cure for hair loss', which just shows you how popular topic it is. We are constantly told that a cure for baldness is on its way - it's just around the corner - it won't be long. But, what is the truth? Are we actually any closer to finding a cure for hair loss, an if so, when will it be, and what will it look like?

In this article, we'll do our best to answer the most commonly asked questions about a hair loss cure. Hopefully, this will shed some light on where we're currently at, and what the future looks like.

How close are we to finding a cure for hair loss?

We've had rumours of a hair growth cream formulated in Turkey, but that seems to be a project that has been ongoing for quite some time now.  There has been no evidence of any real development there.

Another potential development came from a Japanese lab, claiming their unique stem cell growth procedure would the cure that we've all been waiting for. There has been no significant update since 2014.

Will there be a cure for hair loss this year?

There have been other claims from various companies, but, as it currently stands, we don't seem to be any nearer to finding a cure for baldness. Bar a miracle, it is very unlikely we'll find one by the end of this year.

What will a hair loss cure look like?

It's hard to say what a hair loss cure will look like, because there are so many different types of treatments on the market. However, we would guess that it would likely come in the form of a pill, which would be taken orally.
Other possible forms would be a potential topical serum, or a procedure.

Will the cure for hair loss be expensive?

Until we know for sure what the hair loss cure will be, it is hard to say what the cost will be. However, it is likely that a new hair loss cure would be expensive, certainly during its initial stages of release to the market.  A hair loss cure would be revolutionary, and arguably, the biggest medical breakthrough of all time.

What is the closest treatment we currently have to a cure for hair loss?

There are currently only two medically approved hair loss treatments on the market: Finasteride and Minoxidil.

Finasteride (branded as Propecia) is an oral pill for male pattern baldness. It is not a cure for baldness, but it can help stump hair fall in men who suffer from early stages of hair loss. However, Finasteride can come with negative side-effects such as erectile dysfunction, low libido, skin rash, hormonal changes, and severe headaches.

Minoxidil (branded most commonly as Regaine/Rogaine) is an FDA approved topical treatment for male and female hair loss. Again, like with Finasteride, this treatment can come with side-effects, such as headaches, skin problems, weight-gain, and low libido.

Both treatments can be effective to a certain extent, but neither of them offer a cure for baldness.

Will there ever be a cure for hair loss?

It is very likely that we will eventually find a cure for hair loss, but it is not clear when that will be. It is a very time consuming process. Any treatment would need to be developed, tried, tested, and then developed again, before being tried and tested again. Then, if successful, large-scale testing would need to be done, with a 100% success rate for it to even be considered for approval.

What is/are the best treatment(s) to use for hair loss?

Luckily, all is not doom and gloom. There are plenty of options on the market to minimise hair loss and promote healthy hair growth. It's just a case of finding what treatment or product works best for you.

There are topical solutions that offer a good alternative to Minoxidil, as well as natural multi-vitamin supplements that offer a safer solution to the potentially harmful Finasteride.  If you're willing to spend a little more, then hair surgery could be an option. Hair transplantation procedures are becoming hugely popular, and more affordable.
