Olaplex Negative Reviews and Controversy

Olaplex reviews controversy

Is Olaplex safe to use?

If you are a woman battling the devastating effects of thinning hair, then there's a good chance that you have come across the haircare brand, Olaplex.

Olaplex has become a popular brand for women looking to combat hair loss and damage. However, the brand has also come under severe scrutiny in recent times, and is currently under a cloud of controversy.

What is Olaplex?

Olaplex is hair loss treatment brand. It is a system that claims to permanently rebuild the damaged disulphide bonds in the hair that are broken during the chemical process. If you've over-bleached or had your hair highlighted for years, Olaplex claims that it rebuilds the strength, structure and integrity of the hair.

The Olaplex range consists of topical treatments that include the Hair Perfector, the Intense Bond Building Treatment, and the Bond Enhancer Toning Shampoo. These products are not medically approved to treat hair loss, but they do contain some harsh additives.

What is the controversy with Olaplex?

Popular haircare company, Olaplex, is being sued by 28 women who claim its products caused hair loss, blisters and other conditions. The Olaplex range includes shampoos, conditioners and treatments that claim to safely "repair broken bonds and rejuvenate hair", but this ay not appear to be the case.

Olaplex No.3 was the subject of concern after it was revealed that the original formula contained an ingredient called butylphenyl methylpropional, or 'lilial' – a fragrance compound that is set to be banned for cosmetic use in the EU from March 2022 due to safety concerns and a potential risk to fertility.

While studies have suggested that the levels of lilial in one product wouldn't be harmful, if a number of different products were used that also contained the ingredient, the levels could add up.

Is Olaplex harmful to the hair?

Generally speaking, no, Olaplex is not overly harmful to most women, however, it does contain harsh additives that can causes hair loss and hair thinning issues.

Nadia, from Carmarthenshire, tried the Olaplex products, and she was not happy with the range. "Olaplex caused my hair to thin, and fall out. My hair density is about half what it used to be, so as you can imagine, I'm devastated, and furious, at the same time."

Considering Olaplex is not a medially treatment, it is rare for such a product to come with the risks of adverse effects. Non-medical products usually act as a safe alternative to harsh medications such as minoxidil.

The unfortunate thing for Olaplex is that the negative side-effects are mainly hair damage and hair fall - the two things that their products are trying to counter. To say this is disastrous for the company, would be an understatement.

Should you use Olaplex? Until this issue to resolved, and until there is clear evidence of genuine results from using this brand, it would probably be better to look somewhere else for a treatment that is both safer and more effective.
